Punta Gorda has been called “A Boater’s Paradise” by many who have passed through and by those that have settled down. It’s location at the confluence of Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River provides a variety of boating options. A quick ride to the open deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico or a day spent in the protected waters of the harbor and river are daily choices. Punta Gorda is much more than a boating mecca, however. It is a small, historic town that thrives on social activity. From the Gallery Walk to Fisherman’s Village to the Visual Arts Center to a multitude of golf courses, there is always something to do in Punta Gorda. There are bird-watching clubs, fishing clubs, poker clubs and everything in between. The Historic downtown area is a one of the most unique features that Punta Gorda offers. “Old Florida” homes and giant Banyan trees line the brick paved streets. Situated within a 10 minute walk from the historic district is Gilchrist Park, the Charlotte County Convention Center, downtown Punta Gorda with a variety of excellent restaurants/hotels and Fisherman’s Village. Some of the homes in the historic district date to the 1800’s and there is an active (always looking for volunteers) Historical Society that publishes books, pamphlets and hosts tours of the area. For the active souls, your weekends will be filled in Punta Gorda. In the spring, there are weekend sailing regattas in which crew is always being recruited. All year round, there are a variety of tennis leagues and golf groups. There is also a spectacular outdoor swimming pool at the South County Regional Park. Fishing is an all day, everyday event if one chooses it to be. There is always something to do in Punta Gorda. It is a small town that thrives on a sense of community. There are no high-rises. There are no spring break beach goers. There are however, many people with varying interests who have chosen to make Punta Gorda their home or winter residence. |
